In order to understand the circulation and likely influence of Macintosh&#8217;s book, it is necessary to reconstruct (as far as is possible) the book&#8217;s ownership and readership. 19th-century sales catalogues are a useful first step in determining who owned a copy of <em>Travels in Europe, Asia, and Africa<\/em>\u00a0(although not, necessarily, who read it). Such catalogues are one means by which to select those individuals who warrant further attention.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_107\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Burke.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107\" class=\"wp-image-107 size-medium\" title=\"Edmund Burke\" src=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Burke-249x300.jpg\" alt=\"Edmund Burke\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Burke-249x300.jpg 249w, https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Burke.jpg 415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edmund Burke (1729\u20131797), the enthusiastic antagonist of Warren Hastings. National Portrait Gallery, 655.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A far from systematic trawl of some of these catalogues indicates that owners of <em>Travels<\/em> included Edmund Burke, the principal antagonist of Warren Hastings (see page 21 of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=vTlbAAAAQAAJ\"><em>Catalogue of the library of of the late Right Hon. Edmund Burke<\/em><\/a> (1833)). Burke&#8217;s copy of\u00a0<em>Travels<\/em>\u00a0was purchased for 9 s. by one &#8220;Mr Bohn&#8221;\u2014most likely one of the bookseller brothers\u00a0Henry Bohn (1796\u20131884) and\u00a0James\u00a0Bohn (1803\u20131880).<i><br \/>\n<\/i><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_108\" style=\"width: 173px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Hibbert.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-108\" src=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Hibbert-163x300.jpg\" alt=\"George Hibbert (1757\u20131837)\" width=\"163\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Hibbert-163x300.jpg 163w, https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Hibbert.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George Hibbert (1757\u20131837).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The book collector, merchant, and slave owner\u00a0George Hibbert (1757\u20131837) was another eminent figure who owned Macintosh&#8217;s book (see page 442 of <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=ZWBWAAAAYAAJ\"><em>A catalogue of the library of George Hibbert, Esq. of Portland Place<\/em><\/a> (1829)). At the time of the publication of <em>Travels<\/em>,\u00a0Hibbert had recently begun work in London at the Jamaica trading house of\u00a0Hibbert, Purrier and Horton (a firm which he later headed). Hibbert subsequently assumed a central role in the pro-slavery\u00a0Society of West India Planters and Merchants, and it is probable that his interest in Macintosh&#8217;s book related to that author&#8217;s experience as a Caribbean planter and merchant.
