Represented among this fantastic collection is Darnton&#8217;s long-standing interest in\u00a0Jacques Pierre Brissot (who undertook the French translation of Macintosh&#8217;s <em>Travels<\/em>)\u00a0and the\u00a0Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 typographique de Neuch\u00e2tel (STN) who <a title=\"Getting to know Macintosh\u2019s European buyers\" href=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/?p=59\">distributed it<\/a> (at least in part).<\/p>\n<p>Brissot&#8217;s correspondence with the STN had previously been made available via the\u00a0Voltaire Foundation&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voltaire.ox.ac.uk\/www_vf\/brissot\/brissot_index.ssi\">website<\/a>, but has usefully been brought together\u00a0on Darnton&#8217;s site (and richly supplemented by additional materials).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertdarnton.org\/sites\/default\/files\/brissot_letters.pdf\">These letters<\/a> show that Brissot first wrote to the STN over Macintosh&#8217;s book on 23 June 1784, identifying it as one of &#8220;deux ouvrages qu&#8217;on d\u00e9sirerait vendre \u00e0 la feuille\u00a0afin de n&#8217;avoir aucune difficult\u00e9&#8221;. Brissot&#8217;s letter wrongly transliterates\u00a0the book&#8217;s title as\u00a0<em>Voyages en Am\u00e9rique, en Afrique, en Asie<\/em> (rather than\u00a0<em>Voyages en Europe, en Asie et en Afrique<\/em>, as it would <a href=\"http:\/\/gallica.bnf.fr\/ark:\/12148\/bpt6k1043833\">later appear<\/a>). To whet the appetite of the STN, Brissot noted that\u00a0<em>Voyages<\/em> was &#8220;enti\u00e8rement neuf et non encore\u00a0traduit&#8221;. In a later missive, dated 22 October 1784, Brissot referred to the book as\u00a0<em>Nouveaux Voyages de Mackintosh en Asie<\/em>\u2014an inconsistency\u00a0which points to the fact that he had yet to settle on a fixed title for his translation.<\/p>\n<p>Something of the complexity of identifying reference to Macintosh and his work across different linguistic context is exemplified in these letters. The Anglophone Macintosh is the Francophone Mac<strong>k<\/strong>intosh; the Anglophone\u00a0<em>Travels in Europe, Asia, and Africa<\/em> is, variously,\u00a0<em>Voyages en Am\u00e9rique&#8230;<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Voyages en Europe&#8230;<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Nouveaux Voyages de Mackintosh&#8230;<\/em>.
