In the late summer of 2014, Robert Darnton launched an open-access website<\/a>\u00a0collecting together primary materials (and well as Darnton’s own published work<\/a>) relating to the French book trade between 1769 and 1789. Represented among this fantastic collection is Darnton’s long-standing interest in\u00a0Jacques Pierre Brissot (who undertook the French translation of Macintosh’s Travels<\/em>)\u00a0and the\u00a0Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 typographique de Neuch\u00e2tel (STN) who distributed it<\/a> (at least in part).<\/p>\n

Brissot’s correspondence with the STN had previously been made available via the\u00a0Voltaire Foundation’s website<\/a>, but has usefully been brought together\u00a0on Darnton’s site (and richly supplemented by additional materials).\u00a0These letters<\/a> show that Brissot first wrote to the STN over Macintosh’s book on 23 June 1784, identifying it as one of “deux ouvrages qu’on d\u00e9sirerait vendre \u00e0 la feuille\u00a0afin de n’avoir aucune difficult\u00e9”. Brissot’s letter wrongly transliterates\u00a0the book’s title as\u00a0Voyages en Am\u00e9rique, en Afrique, en Asie<\/em> (rather than\u00a0Voyages en Europe, en Asie et en Afrique<\/em>, as it would later appear<\/a>). To whet the appetite of the STN, Brissot noted that\u00a0Voyages<\/em> was “enti\u00e8rement neuf et non encore\u00a0traduit”. In a later missive, dated 22 October 1784, Brissot referred to the book as\u00a0Nouveaux Voyages de Mackintosh en Asie<\/em>\u2014an inconsistency\u00a0which points to the fact that he had yet to settle on a fixed title for his translation.<\/p>\n

Something of the complexity of identifying reference to Macintosh and his work across different linguistic context is exemplified in these letters. The Anglophone Macintosh is the Francophone Mack<\/strong>intosh; the Anglophone\u00a0Travels in Europe, Asia, and Africa<\/em> is, variously,\u00a0Voyages en Am\u00e9rique…<\/em>,\u00a0Voyages en Europe…<\/em>, and\u00a0Nouveaux Voyages de Mackintosh…<\/em>. In any event, Robert Darnton and his research assistants are to be congratulated for\u00a0putting together such an interesting and useful open-access resource.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
