There is <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=t-CY2mzNdH4C&amp;pg=PA132\">some suggestion<\/a> that Macintosh was imprisoned there by Napoleon on the grounds that he\u00a0was in active correspondence with the exiled <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_XVIII_of_France\">Louis XVIII<\/a>. I have recently discovered reference to Macintosh&#8217;s time in Eisenach in the journal of the somewhat-disgraced US Vice President <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aaron_Burr\">Aaron Burr<\/a> (1756\u20131836).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_213\" style=\"width: 591px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/640px-Vanderlyn_Burr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-213\" class=\"wp-image-213\" src=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/640px-Vanderlyn_Burr.jpg\" alt=\"Aaron Burr (1756\u20131836)\" width=\"581\" height=\"790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/640px-Vanderlyn_Burr.jpg 640w, https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/640px-Vanderlyn_Burr-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/640px-Vanderlyn_Burr-624x848.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aaron Burr (1756\u20131836).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Burr&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=MG49AAAAYAAJ\">diary<\/a> records the following encounters with Macintosh:<\/p>\n<p>14 January 1810<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Thence to Massovices&#8217;s, and he and I went together, as invited, to breakfast\u00a0\u00e0\u00a0la forchette with Steickler. Met there Mr. M&#8217;Intosh, a Scotchman, who has been many years in North America, and in Asia and Africa. Had an immense fortune, which he lost by the French revolution. A very intelligent, amusing man.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>15 January 1810<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mr. M&#8217;Intosh came in this morning and sat an hour. I admire his constancy and his loyalty. He is a prisoner on parole, as being a British subject. Has corresponded with Washington. One of the letters now in the museum at Weimar.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although these are only snippets, Burr&#8217;s journal entries are nevertheless helpful in clarifying the chronology of Macintosh&#8217;s life and further indicating the social and political circles in which he moved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the more mysterious periods of Macintosh&#8217;s life is that which he spent in Eisenach\u00a0during the first decade of the nineteenth century.
