Photograph courtesy of Julian Baker.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Last week I was fortunate to participate\u2014along with\u00a0<em>c<\/em>. 700 others\u2014in the 16th <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ichg2015.org\/\">International Conference of Historical Geographers<\/a>. It was a wonderful event and a model of organisation, scholarship, and collegiality.\u00a0On the last day of the conference (somewhat jaded by a week of early mornings and late nights) I presented in a session convened by <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.warwick.ac.uk\/fac\/arts\/cas\/staff\/lambert\/\">David Lambert<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aber.ac.uk\/en\/iges\/staff\/academic-staff\/prm\/\">Peter Merriman<\/a>: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/conference.rgs.org\/ICHG\/117\">Mobility and empire<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>My paper, &#8220;William Macintosh\u2019s <i>Travels<\/i>: colonial mobility and the circulation of knowledge&#8221;, was a version of a book chapter written in early 2012 which has, since then, been inching its way through the production process and should emerge in 2016 in a forthcoming volume of the Springer &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/series\/7568\">Knowledge and Space<\/a>&#8221; series. Having sat dormant for so long, it was good to dust the paper off and introduce some of my Macintosh work to colleagues. A number of useful questions, not least concerning Macintosh&#8217;s apparent transition from slave owner to advocate of individual rights, have given me much to think about.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the other excellent papers in the session, particular highlights during the conference were provided by the three plenary speakers: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/history\/people\/academic-staff\/catherine-hall\/catherine-hall\">Catherine Hall<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.williamcronon.net\/\">Bill Cronon<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hps.cam.ac.uk\/people\/schaffer\/\">Simon Schaffer<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I was fortunate to participate\u2014along with\u00a0c. 700 others\u2014in the 16th International Conference of Historical Geographers.
