{"id":369,"date":"2016-01-19T13:19:59","date_gmt":"2016-01-19T13:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/?p=369"},"modified":"2016-01-22T14:04:30","modified_gmt":"2016-01-22T14:04:30","slug":"the-beauty-and-chill-of-achnacloich","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/?p=369","title":{"rendered":"The beauty and chill of Achnacloich"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the unexpected pleasures of maintaining this blog is being contacted by those who have an interest in Macintosh or who are keen to offer their help and guidance in my research on him (I have written previously about <a href=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/?p=121\">meeting one of Macintosh&#8217;s descendants<\/a>, Deirdre Grieve, and of receiving a copy of the second volume of\u00a0<em>Travels<\/em> from an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/?p=292\">Illinois-based book collector<\/a>, Jeff Armstrong). Last week I received a kind email from the Cromarty-based researcher\u00a0David Alston, who runs the website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spanglefish.com\/slavesandhighlanders\/\">Slaves &amp; Highlanders<\/a>, and who has written on Scottish slavers in\u00a0Guyana.\u00a0On Sunday David was kind enough to head out into the snowy fields north of Invergordon to explore and photograph the area around Loch Achnacloich, Macintosh&#8217;s ancestral territory.<\/p>\n<p>According to George Macintosh&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=yd0AAAAAMAAJ\">Biographical memoir of the late Charles Macintosh<\/a><\/em> (1847), William Macintosh&#8217;s father, Lachlan, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tacksman\">tacksman<\/a>\u00a0of a farm at &#8220;Auchinluich&#8221; (or\u00a0Achnacloich as it is now rendered), part of the estate of Newmore. Writing in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=Y3sLAAAAYAAJ\">Second (new) statistical account of Scotland<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1834\u201345), the Reverend David Carment,\u00a0described\u00a0Achnacloich as a &#8220;small but beautiful and secluded glen&#8221; dominated by a loch (now a <a href=\"http:\/\/jncc.defra.gov.uk\/protectedsites\/sacselection\/sac.asp?EUCode=UK0030189\">Special Area of Conservation<\/a>). It is clear\u00a0that Carment thought Achnacloich uncommon in its beauty, <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=Y3sLAAAAYAAJ&amp;pg=RA1-PA264\">describing the scene<\/a> thus<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the lake&#8217;s eastern extremity, there is a lovely sylvan amphitheatre, from whence a view can be commanded of almost unrivalled majesty.
