Google Books is helpful in another way, too: it is occasionally\u00a0possible to identify the provenance of\u00a0the books it has scanned and thereby to trace something of their likely readership. This much is true, at least, for <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=UZiBgZFnJAQC\">one of the copies<\/a> of the 1786 French translation of Macintosh&#8217;s book,\u00a0<em>Voyages en Europe, en Asie et en Afrique.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The book in question is currently held by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bm-lyon.fr\/\">Biblioth\u00e8que municipale de Lyon<\/a> (at shelfmarks 438670 &#8211; T. 01 and T. 02), but was previously part of the private library of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Baptiste-Fran%C3%A7ois_Gigot_d%E2%80%99Orcy\">Jean-Baptiste-Fran\u00e7ois Gigot d\u2019Orcy<\/a> (1737\u20131793), an important entomologist who\u00a0possessed\u00a0what one contemporary <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=Y6vTOgC1YqoC&amp;lpg=PA797&amp;ots=R37FjD9ISq&amp;dq=%22Receveur%20g%C3%A9n%C3%A9ral%20des%20Finances%2C%20possede%20un%20tr%C3%A8s-beau%20Cabinet%20d%E2%80%99histoire%20naturelle%22&amp;pg=PA797#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">described as<\/a> &#8220;un tr\u00e8s-beau Cabinet d\u2019histoire naturelle&#8221; in his Paris home.\u00a0d\u2019Orcy&#8217;s role as a patron of natural philosophers (such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guillaume-Antoine_Olivier\">Guillaume-Antoine Olivier<\/a>, 1756\u20131814)\u00a0and as a book collector has been detailed on the blog &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/histoire-bibliophilie.blogspot.co.uk\/2013\/03\/gigot-dorcy-lentomologiste.html\">Histoire de la Bibliophilie<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>d\u2019Orcy&#8217;s collection of books, including\u00a0<em>Voyages en Europe, en Asie et en Afrique<\/em>, was auctioned off the year after his death. Macintosh&#8217;s book was item 1458 in the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books\/about\/Catalogue_des_livres_de_feu_citoyen_Gigo.html?id=9nJnmAEACAAJ\">Catalogue des livres de feu citoyen Gigot d\u2019Orcy<\/a><\/em> (yet, sadly, to be scanned by Google Books).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I noted in a recent post\u00a0the value of full text search when it comes to ferreting out obscure references to Macintosh and his work.
