One such source is the 1788 volume\u00a0<em>Catalogue of Five Hundred Celebrated Authors of Great Britain, Now Living<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The entry for Macintosh is only short, just a single sentence, but his inclusion here nevertheless speaks to his\u00a0relative importance (at least in the view of the book&#8217;s compiler, a Mr Abercrombie). Macintosh is <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=lGpLAAAAcAAJ&amp;pg=PA33-IA2#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">herein described<\/a> as &#8220;Author of\u00a0<span class=\"gstxt_hlt\">Travels in Europe, <\/span>Asia and Africa in two volumes octavo, which gave offence to some of our East Indian nabobs, and were answered by Captain Joseph Price&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>As with all such lists, of course, the inclusion or\u00a0exclusion of particular individuals is an issue that arouses strong views. This was certainly true in relation to Abercrombie&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Catalogue<\/em>; the book was subject to rather excoriating reviews in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=zk4DAAAAMAAJ&amp;pg=PA537\"><em>The Gentleman&#8217;s Magazine<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=L5tKAAAAcAAJ&amp;pg=PA87\"><em>The Monthly\u00a0<\/em><i>Review<\/i><\/a>\u00a0on this point and on the patchy biographical treatment of those listed.<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding the apparent deficiencies of Abercrombie&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Catalogue<\/em>, the fact that Macintosh was included at all is helpful in establishing his contemporary significance and celebrity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Given that Macintosh and his book have, over the centuries, drifted into obscurity and are often altogether absent from historical studies of the Age of Revolution, I am always interested in contemporary sources that attest to the significance that he, and\u00a0Travels, had to eighteenth-century\u00a0readers.
