The event\u00a0brought together PhD students from a number of Swiss universities (namely\u00a0<a class=\"external-link-new-window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unifr.ch\/\"><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">Fribourg<\/span><\/a><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">, <\/span><a class=\"external-link-new-window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unige.ch\/\"><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">Geneva<\/span><\/a><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\"><a class=\"external-link-new-window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unil.ch\/\">Lausanne<\/a>,<\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\"> and <\/span><span class=\"goog-text-highlight\"><a class=\"external-link-new-window\" href=\"http:\/\/www.unine.ch\/\">Neuch\u00e2tel<\/a>)<\/span> to discuss, in broad terms, the mobility, circulation, and reception of ideas. Organised by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unige.ch\/sciences-societe\/geo\/collaborateurs\/enseignants\/falljuliet\/\">Juliet Fall<\/a>, the programme included, among other things, a contribution by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dlls.univr.it\/?ent=persona&amp;lang=it&amp;id=403\">Caterina Martinelli<\/a> (a Royal Holloway alumna) on the linguistic and other barriers to the circulation of geographical ideas between Anglophone and non-Anglophone contexts.<\/p>\n<p>It was particularly nice to be able to present my work on Macintosh to the (French-speaking) group, not least because I was able to discuss with them the translation of\u00a0<em>Travels<\/em> into French and the linguistic and conceptual shifts that occurred in that process. There was also a specific local connection. Our venue, a wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aubier.ch\/en\/\">eco hotel, farm, and organic restaurant<\/a>\u00a0in Montezillon, was situated\u00a0in the hills above\u00a0Neuch\u00e2tel, where copies of the French translation of <em>Travels<\/em> were <a href=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/?p=59\">sold and distributed<\/a> by\u00a0the\u00a0Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 typographique de Neuch\u00e2tel some 230 years ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was fortunate this week to participate in an extremely interesting workshop, G\u00e9ographies en mouvements, organised under the auspices of the\u00a0Programme Doctoral de G\u00e9ographie of the Conf\u00e9rence Universitaire de Suisse Occidentale.
