{"id":673,"date":"2019-11-09T11:45:17","date_gmt":"2019-11-09T11:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/?p=673"},"modified":"2026-02-12T16:53:38","modified_gmt":"2026-02-12T16:53:38","slug":"brissot-and-thomson-a-literary-partnership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/?p=673","title":{"rendered":"Brissot and Thomson: a literary partnership?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>To date, I have tended to refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacques_Pierre_Brissot\">Jacques Pierre Brissot<\/a> as the &#8220;translator&#8221; of the French edition of Macintosh&#8217;s book. As with all aspects of this project, the reality of the situation looks to be more complicated still: there is reason to suspect that the translation may have been undertaken by the Grub-Street hack William Thomson (who had earlier provided editorial assistance to Macintosh and Murray in the publication of the original English-language edition of the book). In his 1986 book, <em>Commerce des lumieres: John Oswald and the British in Paris, 1790\u201393<\/em>, David V. Erdman notes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A Thomson project of 1786, a translation into French (later said to be by Brissot) of <em>Travels<\/em> in Europe&#8230;first attributed to William Mackintosh, later to Thomson, may have benefited from some editorial help from [John] Oswald. Oswald&#8217;s own &#8220;Voyage to the East Indies in 1781, with some Account of the Manners, Customs, History, Religion, Philosophy, &amp;c. of Hindostan,&#8221; announced in his British Mercury of 1787 (197) as &#8220;a Work intended for the Press,&#8221; apparently never got into it.<\/p>\n<cite>Erdman (1986), p. 36, n. 4.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Erdman (1986, p. 73) further claims that &#8220;he [Brissot] arranged with Thomson for the publication of several books and pamphlets he was writing, or translating, or editing\u2014including the &#8216;Mackintosh&#8217; <em>Travels<\/em> published by Thomson in 1786&#8243;. While it is clear that Macintosh&#8217;s book had been <a href=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/?p=194\">on Brissot&#8217;s radar for some time<\/a>, since he wrote to the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 typographique de Neuch\u00e2tel on the subject as early as 1784, the working relationship he had with Thomson over the book is less obvious. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/gallica.bnf.fr\/ark:\/12148\/btv1b531358630\/f499.item\">letter dated 4 April 1786<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Alexandre_de_Calonne\">Charles Alexandre de Calonne<\/a>, Brissot states simply that &#8220;J&#8217;ai publi\u00e9 et fait publier diff\u00e9rents ouvrages utiles pour la France <br>\u2014 Voyages de Makintosh [I have published and have had published various useful books for France \u2014 Makintosh&#8217;s <em>Travels<\/em>]&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"914\" height=\"447\" src=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Untitled.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Untitled.png 914w, https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Untitled-300x147.png 300w, https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Untitled-768x376.png 768w, https:\/\/inneskeighren.com\/williammacintosh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Untitled-624x305.png 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 914px) 100vw, 914px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Extract of a letter from Brissot to de Calonne, 4 April 1786.
